New Delhi: The Delhi University has decided to provide a 10% relaxation on the minimum eligibility criteria to OBC candidates. This decision was taken by the varsity by keeping in view a 2011 Supreme Court order, which says that more students from the other backward class (OBC) category will now be eligible to apply for admission to Delhi University from this academic year. The order also says that this would be applicable to undergraduate and postgraduate courses from the 2012-13 session.

The University reserves 27% of its 54,000 seats for OBC candidates at the undergraduate level. Till last year, OBC applicants got 10% relaxation on the final cutoff for general candidates.

Delhi University in a recent notification stated that the OBC candidates shall be given relaxation on the minimum eligibility in the qualifying criteria and in the minimum eligibility for the admission entrance test to the extent of 10% of the minimum eligibility prescribed for general candidates. Suppose, if the minimum eligibility for admission to a certain course is 50% for he general category, then the minimum eligibility criteria for OBC students would be 45%. This would ensure that less number of OBC seats go vacant this year.
